Biographical Note
George Atkinson was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1880. He studied at the Crawfor School of Art in Cork and the Royal College of Art in London. He exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy of Art. He became head of the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, and in 1936 he was appointed director, remaining in that role when it became the National College of Art. An etcher, painter, and designer, he created Irish postage stamps commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Royal Dublin Society and the 150th anniversary of the American constitution.
