Biographical Note

British soldier. Abraham Edgar Thresh was born in Shipley, Yorkshire, England on March 1, 1889. Following active service in France during the First World War, he was posted to the East Lancashire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, serving in Ireland during the Irish War of Independence. He attained the rank of brevet major and retired after the Second World War. He immigrated to New Zealand with his wife and children, where he died in 1971.

Summary

Handwritten letter from British Army lieutenant Abraham Edgar Thresh, East Lancashire Regiment, 2nd Battalion, to his first cousin Margaret Bottomley, of Rockville, Connecticut. Thresh gives recounts the Clonbanin ambush, in which a British Army convey came under attack by Irish Republican Army forces, wounding Thresh and killing two British officers. Thresh's correspondent is Margaret Bottomley (1898-1981), the daughter of his maternal uncle Charles S. Bottomley.
