Biographical note
Joanie Madden was a whistle and flute player from the Bronx, New York. The first American to win the senior All-Ireland Championship for whistle (1984), she was the founder and leader of the band Cherish the Ladies. Her awards for music include the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Mid-Atlantic Region Hall of Fame; the Ellis Island Medal of Honor; and a National Heritage Fellowship from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.
