Biographical note

Originally from London, Tommy McCarthy Jr., son of County Clare-born musician Tommy McCarthy Sr. and dancer Kathleen Connaughton, performed in Ireland and the United Kingdom before moving to Boston in 1986. There he and his wife, multi-instrumentalist Louise Costello, founded several area music pubs beginning with The Burren in 1996. They later moved to Galway and continued to support traditional Irish music in Boston. In 2025, Costello and McCarthy received the Spirit Award from Irish Network Boston's Spirit of Ireland.
