Biographical note

Originally from Limerick, Mick Moloney was a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, folklorist, educator, and producer. After moving to the U.S. in the 1970s to study, he helped establish performing groups such as Green Fields of America and Cherish the Ladies. He earned a doctorate in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 with a research focus on Irish music in America. He received a National Heritage Fellowship from the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts in 1999, a Presidential Distinguished Services Award in 2013 from the President of Ireland, a Gradam Comaoine from TG4 in 2014, and a Pew Fellowship. He taught at New York University, where he was named a global distinguished professor, as well as at Georgetown University, the University of Pennsylvania, Boston College, Villanova University, and the University of Limerick, who conferred on him a posthumous honorary doctorate. In his later years he divided his time between New York and Thailand, volunteering as a music therapist and teacher for abandoned children in Bangkok.
