Biographical note
Michael Smith was an Irish step dancer, choreographer, adjudicator, and teacher in the Boston area. In 1976 he founded The Smith-Houlihan Dance Academy in Norwood, Massachusetts with his wife Noreen Houlihan Smith. He began teaching Irish dance at Boston College in the mid 1990s, and in 1999 he was the assistant choreographer for "Dancing On Dangerous Ground" with Jean Butler and Colin Dunne. He has also served as president of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America.

Boston College Gaelic Roots Festival is primarily documented through audio and video recordings of music and dance performances and lectures. There are also extensive color snapshot photographs of the festival, and these include classes and workshops as well as concerts and lectures. A smaller amount of paper and born-digital files from Séamus Connolly and Chrysandra Walter capture event planning through correspondence, class descriptions, evaluations, press releases, artist schedules,...
