Biographical note

Originally from England, John Whelan was an Irish traditional music accordion player, composer, and producer. His early musical influences in England included music classes with County Clare emigrant Brendan Mulkere. Whelan's recording career began in 1974, and he won the senior All-Ireland button accordion championship in 1983. He became based in the United States in 1980. Twice designated the Irish Music Association Musician of the Year, he was also a composer and producer whose work featured in television and film.
