Biographical note

Irish poet Gerard Smyth was born in the old Liberties area of Dublin in 1951, and Dublin features prominently in his work. He also frequently writes about rural areas in County Meath, where he spent summers in his youth. He has published ten collections of poetry as well as individual poems and contributions to anthologies. In 2012, Smyth was the recipient of the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Poetry Award from the University of St Thomas in Minnesota. He is a member of Aosdána, the Irish affiliation of creative artists. Smyth spent his entire career until his retirement in 2011 as a journalist and editor with The Irish Times, and continued to act as the newspaper’s poetry editor after his retirement.
