Biographical note
Irish poet Macdara Woods was born in 1942 in Dublin, Ireland. He lived in Dublin his whole life, though travelling yearly to Umbria, Italy, and his poetry was strongly linked to that place. He began publishing his poems in the 1960s, with his first collection, Decimal D Sec. Drinks in a Bar in Marrakesh, coming out in 1970. In 1975, he co-founded the literary journal Cyphers with Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Leland Bardwell, and Pearse Hutchinson, and served as its editor. He published a total of thirteen collections, most with Dedalus Press. Woods was known for recording readings of his own poems, and their lyricism contributed to many being adapted as songs, notably by composers Brendan Graham and Benjamin Dwyer. He was elected to Aosdána in 1986. Woods married fellow poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, and they had one son, Niall. Macdara Woods died on June 15, 2018.
