Biographical note

Belgian poet and playwright Liliane Wouters was born on February 5, 1930, in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium. She taught school from 1949 to 1990, and this experience inspired her most famous play, 'La salle des profs' ("The Teachers' Room"). Her poetry earned her numerous awards, as well as membership in l'Académie Royale de Langue et de Littérature française de Belgique, the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature, and the European Academy of Poetry. In addition to writing her own poetry, Wouters regularly translated Flemish poetry into French. In 2007, she published a novel, Paysage flamand avec nonnes, which was inspired by Wouters' own experiences as a pupil at the Normaalschool in Gijzegem near Aalst and was translated three years later as 'Flemish Landscape with Nuns'. Wouters died in 2016 in the Hainaut village of Gilly near Charleroi, following an illness.
