Biographical note

Marie Elizabeth Zakrzewska was born in Germany in 1829. After studying midwifery in Berlin, she emigrated to the United States and attended Western Reserve College. She founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children with fellow physician Elizabeth Blackwell. Zakrzewska then moved to Boston and was a professor of obstetrics at the New England Female Medical College. In 1862, she resigned from the college and started her own hospital, the New England Hospital for Women and Children. It was the second hospital in the country administered by women physicians and surgeons. Zakrzewska died in 1902 in Boston.
