Biographical note

William (Liam) Joseph Mellows was an Irish republican and Sinn Féin politician. He was born in 1892 in England and was raised in Dublin and Wexford, Ireland. Mellows was active with the Irish Republican Brotherhood and Irish Volunteers, and participated in the Easter Rising and the War of Independence. Elected as a Teachta Dála to the First Dáil in 1921, he rejected the Anglo-Irish Treaty. In 1922, he was one of four senior IRA men executed by the free state Government.
