Biographical note

Italian cardinal and papal legate. As the first papal legate to China, Carlo Tommaso Maillard de Tournon enforced the ban of the so-called Chinese rites among Chinese Christians.

Scope and Contents

Manuscript copy of Tournon's account of the journey from Macau to Peking, and reception by the Kangxi Emperor, dated 1705, followed by Supplicatio Facta Imperatori (1707), a petition submitted to the Kangxi Emperor by the Jesuit Antoine Thomas and others, appealing on Tournon's behalf following his imprisonment at Macau, both written in the same secretary hand.
