Biographical note
W. H. (William Hoover) Van Voris was born on September 6, 1923, in San Francisco, California, to Alice (Hoover) and William Thomas Van Voris Papandre. He received his BA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1949 where he met his wife, Jacqueline Naggiar. Van Voris was hired at Smith College in 1957 and was an associate professor there from 1963-1991. In 1975, he published Violence in Ulster: An Oral Documentary, documenting the political and social crises in Northern Ireland from 1968 to 1972. Van Voris continued to do research on Northern Ireland throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and died on September 24, 2000 in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.
