Biographical Note

Elizabeth Longford was born Elizabeth Harman in 1906. She became a biographer whose subjects included Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth (the wife of George VI), Winston Churchill, Lord Byron, and Wilfrid Scawen Blunt. An outspoken Catholic and socialist, she married social reformer Frank Pakenham, Lord Longford, in 1931. The couple had eight children, many of whom also became writers. Elizabeth Longford published her memoirs, entitled The Pebbled Shore, in 1986 on the occasion of her eightieth birthday. She died in 2002.
