Biographical Note

Frederick James Furnivall was born at Egham, Surrey. He earned a BA (1846) and MA (1849) from Cambridge University and was awarded a number of honorary degrees from other institutions. Furnivall was especially interested in Early and Middle English literature and Shakespeare. Furnivall founded and participated in a number of literary societies during his lifetime. He died in London.

Abstract

This collection consists of letters to nineteenth-century philologist Frederick James Furnivall, primarily from American Shakespearean scholar Horace Howard Furness. Single letters from English scholar Joseph Hirst Lupton and George H. Radford are also included. Letters discuss literary matters, specifically Shakespearean prose, but also contain some personal asides.
