Biographical Note

Matthew Russell, SJ was born in Newry, County Down. He entered the Jesuit Order in 1857 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1864. Russell established the Irish Monthly in 1873 and served as editor for nearly forty years. He also wrote many volumes of verse. He died in 1912 in Dublin.
