Biographical Note

John J. McAleer, literary historian and author. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1923, he completed his BA and MA at Boston College, followed by a doctorate in English from Harvard in 1955. He taught English at Boston College from 1955 to 2003. McAleer's diverse scholarly output included the authorized biography of American detective novelist Rex Stout; biographic works about other American authors; edited collections of works from Hanoverian ballads to the philosophy of Theodore Dreiser; and novels.
