Biographical note

Joseph W. McCarthy was born March 6, 1915 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Dennis F. and Elizabeth Doyle McCarthy. He was educated at the Cambridge parochial schools, Boston College High School, and Boston College (AB, 1939). McCarthy was drafted into the Army in 1941, and was recruited as a writer for the army magazine Yank, eventually becoming the managing editor of the magazine. As a freelance writer, he published a number of articles in magazines such as Look, Life, Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post, The New Yorker, Cosmopolitan, Holiday, Good Housekeeping, McCall's, This Week, Reader's Digest, and The American Weekly. He also published some longer form work, including an edited compilation of Fred Allen's letters and two books about the Kennedys. McCarthy died on January 29, 1980.

Papers of twentieth century American magazine author and Boston College alumnus Joe McCarthy (1915-1980), including drafts, published clippings, notebooks, research files, correspondence, and collected works by others.

Restrictions on Access Collection is open for research. The audio cassettes and VHS videocassettes have been digitally copied; all original media were retained, but may not be played due to format.
