Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Professional and personal papers of Emmet J. Larkin, a long-time Professor of British and Irish History at the University of Chicago. Larkin’s principal interest was the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland in the nineteenth century and his work in that area is reflected in several series: research materials in church archives; research materials in the archives of religious orders; drafts of books; drafts and copies of other writings;... and records of grants. There are also records of Larkin’s involvement in the American Conference for Irish Studies. The collection includes documentation of Larkin’s college and graduate work and his teaching and professional commitments. Reflecting the relationships he built with other scholars through his teaching are audio recordings given to Larkin by Peggy M. Walsh, an Irish history professor and former student who traveled to Ireland to interview individuals who had been involved in the Irish independence movement between 1916-1923. Extensive correspondence reflects all of Larkin’s activities.
