Definition and use
A mantelletta is a sleeveless, open-front liturgical garment that reaches to one’s knees. Post-Vatican II, cardinals and bishops are no longer permitted to wear mantelletta; instead they wear a mozzetta. Only a few prelates continue to wear mantelletta, all of whom reside in Rome.
