Meyerson, Bess, 1971 December 1

File — Box: 3 (original media), Item: 13-15

Scope and Contents

The edited interview was published in the March 26, 1972 issue of the New York Times. In the recording, Myerson is talking about product labeling for consumers (in 1969 she was named New York City’s Commissioner of Consumer Affairs.) Starting at about minute eight there is a recording of her on a TV show (she had a syndicated TV show on consumer affairs), speaking first with a doctor about the Pill and other medicine for women, and then with someone speaking about what to look for in healthy salad items in the supermarket produce section. The second side continues Myerson's recorded TV show, talking with her guest about the upcoming 1972 elections and the role of the women's vote and women candidates. The third side starts with Myerson talking about when she was preparing for the commissioner job, and about her current TV show. Kent asks her to revisit having been the only Miss America who was Jewish, and the period of time in her life immediately following that with the touring and personal appearances that were required of her. She instead went back to her music and gave concerts and did speaking engagements, then got married and went to Columbia University to study music, then went into television. On the fourth side, Myerson talks about now being in office as a city commissioner versus her past life in television and as Miss America; then discussing her admiration for Ralph Nader as a consumer advocate who has been the catalyst for the current consumer movement in America. Kent asks her to talk about her TV show, and about her daughter's acting career, which she does. Also addresses possible future elected office, and the women's lib movement.
