Historical note
In 1961, Cushing inaugurated "Nun Day" at Fenway Park, welcoming an estimated 500 to 700 nuns to a Boston Red Sox game. He wanted to demonstrate that nuns were an active part of everyday society and shared a love of sports like baseball. The Red Sox hosted the Detroit Tigers at the game and Cushing threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
