The Trembling of the Veil, partial manuscript

Scope and Contents

This manuscript contains that portion of Yeats's Autobiographies beginning with "Ireland after Parnell," in The Trembling of the Veil and continuing to its end. The right-hand page begins with the words, "When Carleton was dying in 1870..." and talks about his first meeting with Douglas Hyde, who played so vital a role in the revival of Irish as a literary language. Yeats credits Hyde with having sent him in manuscript the bets tale in his Faery an dFolk Tales. The Autobiographies as a whole cover the period from his earliest childhood to the end of the nineties and introduces the reader to some of the shapers and movers of Irish cultural and political affairs in that time.
