The Martha Moore Avery papers pertain largely to her work as evangelist and public lecturer. Materials in this series include artifacts, correspondence, personal papers, printed materials, a scrapbook, subject files, and her writings and notes. Artifacts include some of Avery’s personal effects, such as hatpins and shoes, as well as ephemera collected at events, such as a Boston College garden party pennant. Her correspondence most often concerns her Anti-Socialist activities and involvement with the Karl Marx Class, the Boston School of Political Economy, and the Catholic Truth Guild. Printed materials and personal papers include posters, programs, fliers, and tickets to events at which Avery spoke, as well as Philomatheia bylaws and constitutions, invitations and programs, and membership cards.

Avery’s scrapbook is made up of a selection of her writings, newspaper articles, and pamphlets concerning her views on unions, wage workers’ equal pay, women’s suffrage, religion, and socialism. Subject files contain newspaper clippings, journal articles, and other materials on similar subjects. Writings contain drafts of her works, notes on particular subjects and people, class lecture notes, and published materials such as newspaper clippings and pamphlets. There are also a small number of notes describing Avery, written by sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, where Avery’s daughter Katherine was a nun.
