Friends of the Deaconess, 1957 - 1986

 File — Box: 19, Folder: 23

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Correspondence and subject files were compiled mainly by Ellen Howland, director of NEDH SON from 1956-1985, and Barbara Hooker, director from 1985-1989. Correspondence consists of internal administrative correspondence and memos as well as external correspondence with alumni, state and federal agencies, hospitals, and businesses. Subject files contain administrative memos and records, as well as research files and older records documenting the school's origins and history. Cadet Nurse Corps records in the subject files date from 1943-1946 and detail the accelerated training given to nurses during WWII as part of a government-sponsored program that subsidized tuition in exchange for a pledge of service during wartime. Also of interest is a notebook that appears to have been written by 1898 School of Nursing graduate and long-time superintendent of the hospital, Adeliza Betts, discussing the early years of the school and the enrollment of Indian student Sonimani (Bertha) Shaw, for whom there is also a subject file. Some records are closed due to privacy, student information, or financial restrictions.
