The Subject Files series consists of Greene’s collected materials and correspondence concerning a variety of topics, individuals, and events. Of particular note are files concerning Greene’s fire guard service during World War II; the controversial publication of Lolita; fellow authors T. S. Eliot, Ford Madox Ford, Mervyn Peake, Evelyn Waugh, and others; and Greene’s distant cousin, Robert Louis Stevenson. Political concerns are represented by material related to Norwegian political activist Nordahl Grieg; imprisoned Czech journalist Karel Kyncl; Nazi Rudolf Hess; and Greene’s former superior in British Intelligence, the Soviet spy Kim Philby. Religious issues are covered by files concerning Padre Pio and correspondence with the Thomas More Society of London on a failed attempt to recruit Greene to speak on morality.
