 File — Box: 71, Folder: 9

Scope and Contents

Documents the furor created when Graham Greene recommended Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita, then published in English only in France, as one of his favorite books of 1955 in The Sunday Times (London), and the Sunday Express responded, calling Lolita "sheer unrestrained pornography." Also covers the ultimate publication of the book in Britain. Includes two letters from Nabokov, but the bulk of the correspondence is between Greene and editors and publishers. A smaller amount is later enquiry about the original event, including a 1959 typescript of an article by Leonard Russell, literary editor of The Sunday Times remembering it. Also includes newspaper clippings about the controversy.
