Coventry Patmore's Angel, circa 1991
Dates
- Creation: circa 1991
Scope and Contents
These papers document English author Ian Anstruther's work on his book Coventry Patmore's Angel: A Study of Coventry Patmore, His Wife Emily and "The Angel in the House" (1992). The book is about English poet Coventry Patmore (1823-1896) and the impact of his popular poem, "The Angel in the House," on mid-19th century England. Written during the Victorian era, the poem became a catalyst for controversy regarding the role of women and was used by advocates of tradition, who were opposed to the then-nascent feminist movement.
These papers also include correspondence and documents from two other literary scholars interested in Patmore's work.
