Historical note: Fleadh Cheoil

The aim of the Fleadh Cheoil (music festival) was to publicize traditional music and to forestall a decline in its popularity in Ireland. The first Fleadh Cheoil was held in Mullingar in May 1951. After only five years, the annual Fleadh had grown to a major national festival featuring performances from traditional musicians, singers, and dancers from throughout Ireland. As Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) grew internationally, performers came from further afield, often earning a place by participating in regional or provincial Fleadhanna.
