Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains the records of Newton College of the Sacred Heart’s three presidents, Eleanor Kenny (1946-1956), Gabrielle Husson (1956-1969), and James Whalen (1969-1974). They document the founding of the college, its administration, expansion, recruitment and fundraising efforts, and eventually its consolidation with Boston College. Also significantly represented in the series are details about the culture of the college, the presidents’ interactions with students, alumnae, donors, and organizations associated with the college. The series consists largely of correspondence, and also contains meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, notes, printed materials, and subject files. The most notable correspondent is Cardinal Richard Cushing, who was instrumental in the founding of the college. Of historical significance are records containing campus reactions to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
