Scope and Contents
This series consists of records of the Society of the Sacred Heart, a congregation of women religious founded in 1800 by Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat. These records were given to Newton College, which was founded and governed by Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The series includes materials related to convents and schools of the Sacred Heart, the Newton Country Day School, affiliated colleges, and the Sodality of the Children of Mary (Enfants des Marie), a lay organization for young women, which had strong connections to the Society of the Sacred Heart. There are also publications and newsletters in both French and English. Of special interest are a number of papal decrees, publications, and panegyrics related to the beatification and canonization of Saints Madeleine-Sophie Barat and Phillipine Duchesne. Formats include: film strips; photographs; printed materials, such as newsletters and broadsides; reports; the results of a sociological self-study; religious medals; slides; and a wire recording.
