Historical note: Woodcuts
A woodcut print is created by carving a relief image into a block of wood and printing that image onto a piece of paper. In Europe, woodcutting developed beginning in the fifteenth century and flourished as a cost-effective way to illustrate books on paper, since the images could be set alongside text and printed numerous times.
