Manuscript Book of Hours produced in France in the latter part of the 15th century. The liturgical calendar, antiphons, and chapter readings are consistent with the Use of Troyes.

Custodial History

Blindstamped on front flyleaf: Joannes Bernardus Episcopus Bostoniensis. Former shelfmark on spine: 5500 7 CAB (presumed to be from St. John's Seminary, Brighton, Mass.).

Provenance

The immediate source of acquisition is unknown. Based on a cataloging note adhered to the binding, the volume may have belonged to St. John's Seminary.

General Note

Ms. codex. Layout: written in 17 lines; frame-ruled. Collation: Parchment, fol. ii (modern paper) + 116 + ii (modern paper) ; 1-2⁶ 3-8⁸ 9 five 10-15⁸ 16 three ; horizontal catchwords. Script: Written in a gothic book hand in black ink with red rubrics. Decoration: illuminated initials, floriated borders, and 5 miniatures: John on Patmos, the Annunciation, the Visitation, David in prayer, Job on the dunghill.

Binding Information

Bound in later full vellum with clasps. Gilt-stamped illustration of unidentified church facade or altar on both covers. Gilt title on spine "Missal" probably indicating a remboîtage (reuse of binding).
