Scope and Contents
The Charles J. Reardon, SJ papers document the religious career of Reardon, Jesuit and theology professor. The collection consists primarily of notes for sermons and prayers of petition for the Catholic Mass, as well as notes, articles, and teaching materials for religious counseling on issues of marriage, virginity, and sexuality. Additional materials include biographical material relating to Reardon's education and military service, sheet music, and photographs.

Biographical note
Charles J. Reardon was born in 1907 in Rutland, Vermont. After graduating from Rutland High School, he enrolled at the College of Holy Cross. He attended Holy Cross for two years and then entered the Society of Jesus in 1927. He was ordained in June 1939. During World War II, Reardon served as a military chaplain in Europe before being discharged in 1946.
Reardon taught extensively, first at Cranwell Preparatory from 1943-1944, then at Holy Cross from 1946-1947, and then in the Boston College Theology Department from 1952-1970. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Reardon also served as a spiritual counselor at Boston College and in various parishes in the Boston Archdiocese. He was chaplain at St. John of God Hospital in Brighton from 1975-1989.
Reardon died at the age of 86 in 1991.

Abstract

The collection consists of sermons and prayers of the faithful, and teaching materials on marriage and sexuality. Materials are mostly typescripts and manuscripts.

Provenance
Part of the collection was acquired in 1987 and the rest was received as a gift from Paul Nelligan, S.J. in 2000.
