Dates
- Creation: 1863 - 1864
Scope and Contents
Ledger with accounts of wages for the crew of the merchant ship Tarquin during its 1863 voyage from Marseilles to Sumatra. Also includes three 1864 letters, written by Boston merchants George and John Gardener, to Thomas Hoyt in Paris, naming him supercargo for an additional trip from Marseilles to the West Coast of Sumatra in the French ship Julie to purchase pepper for resale in France on their behalf. The three letters include the official orders for Hoyt, his compensation, and an additional private set of orders that indicate the official orders are a cover to hide an additional $40,000 Spanish dollars on board. The letters are copies made from the originals by Hoyt.
