Scope and Contents

The collection includes materials belonging to and about eighteenth-century Irish tenor and composer Michael Kelly. Concerning Kelly there are contemporary newspaper clippings regarding his performances, a hand-written list of his compositions and dates, and a subscription list from an effort to erect a memorial to him in Ireland after his death. There are also several pieces of correspondence to Kelly from the Drury Lane Theatre acknowledging salary owed. Lastly, there is a manuscript resolution of the Association of the Friends of Ireland in Philadelphia, whose relationship to Kelly is undocumented.

Biographical Note

Vocalist and composer Michael Kelly was born in 1962 in Dublin, Ireland. He attended conservatory in Naples in 1779 and began tenor performances in Italian opera. After four years as part of an Italian company in residency at the court of Emperor Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor at Vienna, Kelly moved to London. He performed and directed for the Drury Land and Kings Theatres, as well as singing in concerts. He died at the age of 64 in Margate, England.
