Boston College collection of Northern Ireland political posters and ephemera
Dates
- Creation: 1965-2010s
- Creation: Majority of material found within 1970s-1980s
Scope and Contents
This collection contains English and Irish language political posters and ephemera created in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, a period of violent conflict between Protestant unionists and Roman Catholic nationalists in Northern Ireland.
It includes election campaign posters for Sinn Féin and Ulster Unionist Party candidates, as well as Ailtirí na hAiséirghe party posters. Posters also represent various nationalist causes, such as the H-Block hunger strikes of 1980 and 1981, campaigns against the police and their use of plastic bullets, campaigns against British occupation, extradition, and the imprisonment of IRA members, as well as posters advocating for Irish prisoners abroad. Some posters also represent unionist causes, including unionist-backed labor strikes. Others memorialize children, prisoners, and IRA members killed in the conflict. The collection also contains a selection of commemorative posters from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland from events held in the early 2000s commemorating historical conflicts with Britain, including the 1916 Easter Rising, the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and the Great Famine, as well as events from the Troubles.
The collection also includes a sampling of other ephemera with political content, such as the "Republican Resistance" calendar, ball-point pens with slogans, pins for activist groups, Christmas cards with images of Northern Ireland prisons, and election brochures and fliers.
Many of the images in this collection contain depictions of violence, destruction, death, injury, and trauma during the political and religious conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles.

Abstract
Political posters and ephemera created in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, a period of violent conflict between Protestant unionists and Roman Catholic nationalists in Northern Ireland. Included are election campaign posters, posters that represent nationalist and unionist causes, and posters memorializing people who died in the conflict. Additionally, there are a few posters published in the Republic of Ireland from events commemorating historical conflicts with Britain and a small amount of ephemera with political content, such as calendars, cards, pins, and pens.
Arrangement
Arranged by form in thirteen series: I. Posters; II. Calendars; III. Christmas cards; IV. Fliers and brochures; V. Forms and letterhead; VI. Handbook; VII. Information packets; VIII. Leaflet; IX. Mock-ups for posters; X. Pens; XI. Pins and coin; XII. Postcards; and XIII. Press photographs.
Series I. Posters is further divided into four subseries: A. Incarceration and prisoners' rights; B. Newspaper headlines; C. Politics and activism; and D. Twenty-first-century posters commemorating earlier events.
Provenance
Because the current accessioning system was not used until January 1986, it is not possible to know exactly the dates of acquisition of materials received before that time. Two posters were gifts of Susan Moynihan in 2010; many others were collected or purchased by former Boston College Burns Librarian Robert Keating O'Neill. A significant body of posters and all the ephemera were a purchase from Kennys Bookshop & Art Galleries in 2023.
Separated Materials
Published works including booklets, reports, and periodicals associated with this collection have been transferred within the Burns Library and can be found in the Boston College Library catalog.
