Scope and Contents
A collection of over 6,000 postcards from a variety of locations in Massachusetts, organized by county. Also included are approximately 500 postcards from the Republic of Ireland and another approximately 50 postcards from Northern Ireland. The postcards depict various historical and cultural sites, hotels, restaurants, recreational activities, and artwork. Fewer than 10 are written on and postmarked.

Biographical / Historical
Michael Ehrmann was born in New York City, grew up predominantly in Boulder, Colorado, and has also lived in Berkeley, California; Paris, France; McLean, Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Jersey City, New Jersey. He has a BA from Wesleyan University and Masters Degrees from Cornell University and George Washington University.
During the first 15 years of professional life, Ehrmann worked on various government housing programs. Then, he and his wife worked together in a real estate appraisal practice that they owned, specializing in appraising historic properties.
Ehrmann collected postcards from around the world over seventy years, beginning with postcards brought to him at the age of eleven by his father, who traveled on business.

Abstract

Arrangement
The collection is arranged in four series: I. Ireland; II. Massachusetts; III. New England; and IV. Northern Ireland. The Ireland and Massachusetts series are further arranged in sub-series by county.

Processing Information
This collection was processed while maintaining Ehrmann's arrangement and using his labelled dividing tabs to delineate groupings of cards. As such, some labels have misspellings or crossed out former headings. The archivist reordered some groupings to reflect actual alphabetical order, but did not rearrange postcards within groupings. A few dividers were removed because there were no postcards in that category.
