Scope and Contents

Manuscript containing musical notation of chants for the Catholic celebration of the Mass for the Feast of the Transfiguration, consisting of 50 leaves, written in black, red, and blue ink, on parchment, and bound in full leather. Includes De epiphania Ieus nati (Quicumque Christum quaeritis), Kyrie eleison, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Music in neumatic notation; four-line staff ruled in red. Pen-flourished initials in red and blue. Divisional title on leaf 4 recto is dated 1590. Likely produced in Spain.

Contents from inscription on inside front cover: Aduíertase q[ue] el hy[m]no esta e la primera hoja y los kyries, gloria, Credo. Sanctus, y agnus de la missa de la tra[n]sfiguracio[n] esta[n] luego. Sucesive tras de la missa y tambien ojo se advierta q[ue] las tres lectiones de los difuctos esta[n] en lo prostero deste libro.

Historical note

Catholic feast day. The Transfiguration of Jesus is a miraculous event described in the New Testament in which Jesus becomes radiant in divine glory on a mountaintop. In the Catholic Church the Feast of the Transfiguration is observed on 6 August.

Y el officio de difunctos que se entiende el [primero] nocturno y la missa, acabose en el año del nacimiento de n[uestr]o señor de mil y quinientos y nouenta años [1590] sie[n]do visitadores y mayordomo deste Ospítal del Salvador desta ciudad de Vbeda, don Perafan de Ribera y Francisco de Carión u su mayordomo Ju[an] Ramírez Blanco hizose por su mandado. Soli Deo honor et gloria.
