Scope and Contents

Side-stitched manuscript of 24 leaves (some double-leaves), including four full-page illustrations, being a compendium of texts opposing the propagation of Christianity in Japan. Included are selections from Seiyō kibun by Arai Hakuseki, based on his conversations with Italian missionary Giovanni Battista Sidotti, Taiji jashū ron by Sessō Sōsai, Hekija kanken roku by Tetsujō Ukai, and an article from a Chinese newspaper published in 1861. The illustrations depict fumi-e, Christian imagery which suspected Japanese Christians were ordered to trample on. The texts were copied by Ohtomo Chikamitsu.
