Scope and Contents

Scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings primarily related to the conflict between the Catholic Church and the American public school system in the late nineteenth-century, specifically in Boston, Massachusetts. The clippings provide a detailed analysis of the controversy that arose over the role of religion in public education, and the political and social implications of this conflict, including the impact it had broadly on the Catholic Church in America. Also included in the scrapbook are newspaper articles about adjacent subjects, such as women's right to vote in school committees, and the role of religion in marriage and divorce.

Historical note: the School Question

The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, written by Edwin Doak Mead and published in 1888, explored the conflict between the Catholic Church and the American public school system in the late nineteenth-century, and presumably was the inspiration for the title of this scrapbook. The book expands on a lecture delivered before the Woman Suffrage League in Boston, Massachusetts, and explores the controversy that was caused by Boston's school committee’s rejection of "Swinton's History" textbook. The basis of the rejection was the Catholic committee members' opposition to Swinton's treatment of the sale of indulgences in the time of Martin Luther.
