Color portrait of Saint John of Nepomuk by an anonymous artist, set within the double-headed eagle emblem of the Holy Roman Empire. With caption: S. Joannes Nepo. Produced after John of Nepomuk's canonization, possibly in the Czech Republic, where he still commonly revered.

Biographical note
Czech Catholic martyr. Born in the Pilsen region of Bohemia, John of Nepomuk became Vicar General of the Prague Archdiocese. In 1393 he was tortured and executed for defying King Wenceslaus IV. He was canonized in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII.
