Unnumbered title leaf followed by 312 numbered pages, including some blanks and irregularities in pagination. Evidence of excised pages at front, after the blank following the first page 13, preceding the second page 13, and following pages16, 54, 84, 122, 154, 178, 215, 223, 233, and 247. Contains transcriptions and translations from Horace, original poems, thoughts on the births and deaths of family members, and an account of the London anti-Catholic... riots of 1780, known as the Gordon Riots. With an index on page 261. On pages 291-293 are transcribed in a later hand the Gentleman's Magazine obituaries of Joseph Woods, and of his mother Sarah (Neale) Woods.

Biographical Note

English Quaker abolitionist and writer. Joseph Woods was an English businessman and writer known for his work Thoughts on the slavery of the Negroes (1784). He was the father of the architect and botanist Joseph Woods Jr. (1776-1864).
