Biographical / Historical
Anthony Graham Carroll, SJ, was born on August 9, 1906, to Henry Carroll and Isabella V. Mulcahy Carroll. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1922, at the age of 16, and was ordained a priest on June 23, 1935. He taught chemistry at the College of the Holy Cross from 1930 to 1932, and then at Boston College. At Boston College, Carroll was director of the Crystal, an undergraduate chemical magazine that gained national renown in collegiate scientific circles. He also served as editor of the Jesuit Science Bulletin, a national Jesuit science journal. On January 12, 1940, he became a reserve chaplain for the United States Army, rising to Captain in 1942 and Major in 1945. He served as Chaplain of the Post Hospital at Camp Edwards from 1941 to 1942, when he was assigned to Army Air Force units overseas, serving in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. He was in the Pacific for four years and three months, one of the longest tours of overseas duty by an Army Chaplain. He received numerous campaign ribbons, two Presidential Unit Citations, and the Army Commendation Medal. In 1946, he returned to Boston College, where he was appointed Regent of the new School of Nursing. In 1950, Carroll took a leave of absence from Boston College, ultimately deciding to leave the Jesuits later that year. He died in 1972 in Dallas, Texas.
