Materials Specific Details

In vellum. Color illustrations. Gothic script on vellum, 18 lines per page (calendar, 17 lines), writing block of 95 x 58 mm. Decoration: 29 illuminations; 14 measure 36 x 36 mm and 15 measure 110 x 63 mm. Calendar is not illuminated. The Gospel readings begin with a large-scale illumination of St. John; the other three evangelists and illuminated in the smaller scale, as are the prayers. The eight offices of the Virgin have large-scale illuminations, as do the beginning of the Penitential Psalms, the Short Hours of the Cross, the Short Hours of the Holy Spirit, the Office of the Dead, the Joys of the Virgin, and the Requests to Our Lord. The Suffrages of the Saints have nine small-scale illuminations. Borders of flowers, fruit, animals (some mythic) and foliage in reds, browns, blues, greens and gold leaf, with pen and ink scrolls and dots. Bound in 19th(?) century gold-tooled calf; silver clasp and post; four enamels of the Virgin on front cover; 19th century French marbled endpapers; gold foredges; in a solander box with spine title: French Book of Hours Ms. 86-97.
