Biographical note: George Townshend
George Townshend, Lord Lieutenant and General Governor of Ireland, assumed the post under the Chatham Ministry in August 1767 and pursued reforms to expand Irish regiments, curb corruption, and stimulate the Irish economy. After the Irish Parliament rejected his proposed money bill, he prorogued the legislature in November 1767, an unpopular move that intensified opposition in Dublin.
