Manuscript notebook written on laid paper, containing examples of arithmetic problems, currency conversion, tables of weights and measures for liquid and dry goods, word problems, methods of calculating interest, etc. Headings are written in a tall calligraphic script.

Biographical note: Jacob Lodge

American. The identity of Jacob Lodge has not been confirmed. Textual evidence in the cyphering book suggests the owner was a young American living in eastern Massachusetts in the early 19th century.

Custodial History

Written in calligraphic script on back cover: Jacob Lodge's cyphering book. Wenham, Feb. 16th, 1810. On some pages the names Lucy Davis and Ellen Badger are written in pencil in a child's handwriting.
