Administrative History
Boston College Office of Public Relations was created in 1948 to strengthen the relationship of the College with surrounding communities and to communicate better the achievements of its units, faculty, and students. The Office originally coordinated events sponsored by outside organizations on campus, oversaw speakers for the Boston College Holy Name Society, and the director spoke at community events around the region promoting Boston College. As the College grew, Public Relations began producing press releases and promoting stories to both local and national newspapers, as well as radio and television. It also assisted in the production of Boston College's catalogs and brochures, including Commencement materials. By the 1970s, the office produced weekly and monthly University publications (the Bridge and the Thursday Reporter). In 1980 the office was replaced by an expanded Office of Communications.
