Boston College. Office of Communications
Biography
In 1980, Boston College announced the dissolution of the Office of Public Relations and the establishment of the Office of Communications. Headed by Paul Hennessy, a former Associated Press reporter and educational television writer, strategized to increase the frequency of periodicals published primarily for the alumni audience. At his recommendation, electronic word-processing and typesetting equipment systems were introduced in order to expand Communication's capabilities and productivity in all areas. Hennessy also represented a centralization of operations and a strengthening of lines of communication with the University's faculty and administrative staff. BC's print footprint expanded rapidly. The office developed publicity for BC alumni and potential students. Included in the office's publications are the Biweekly, Parent Newsletter, University Annual Report, as well as numerous brochures and flyers for theater shows and other events on campus. When Doug Whiting stepped down as the director in 1991 the decision was made to restructure the unit by splitting it into two administrative units: the Office of Publications and Print Media, to be headed by Ben Birnbaum, and the Office of Public Affairs, to be headed by Robert Kaiser.
